From the young age of seven (7), Kent's love for golf was evident. He displayed an unparalleled determination, even riding his bicycle to the golf course with golf clubs in tow, to pursue his passion independently. At nine (9) years old, Kent suffered a setback from a car accident while riding his bike but his unwavering dedication to golf remains unshaken. He refused hospitalization and hid his injuries because he didn’t want to lose his parents’ permission to ride to the golf course. When he arrived at the club that day the golf professionals, friends, and mentors at the club helped bandage him up and fixed his bike. Their belief in him gave him the confidence to continue pursuing his dreams with a resilience that would define his career.
Kent's journey took a pivotal turn when he crossed paths with “Wild” Bill Melhorn, a legendary figure whose mentorship ignited Kent's transformation as a playing professional and later as an instructor. Under Melhorn's guidance, Kent honed his skills, embodying an unwavering commitment to fundamentals and excellence. He was determined to out-practice anybody he had ever known in golf and was dedicated to “owning” all the shots we are faced with in golf. He was relentless!
Transitioning to a professional playing career, Kent's realization of his gift for teaching prompted a shift in focus. His transition from player to mentor was marked by a profound desire to support aspiring golfers in reaching their full potential. Establishing his first academy at Moon Valley Country Club, Kent's reputation as a mentor grew, attracting promising talents and forging lifelong friendships within the golfing community.
Kent's influence extended beyond local boundaries, as he spearheaded initiatives to grow the game internationally, co-founding the Guatemala American Golf Exchange Program and imparting his expertise to countless thousands of students. He became a prominent teacher in 37 countries. Among his most significant honors and achievements are being awarded SW PGA of America “Teacher of the Year”, and US Kids Golf International “Master Teacher of Golf”.
With a roster of successful students spanning various levels of play, Kent's impact on the golfing landscape was undeniable. From US Kids champions to aspiring PGA and LPGA champion tour professionals, his tutelage produced a lineage of accomplished players, each a testament to his guiding principles of excellence and relentless pursuit of mastery.
Beyond the fairways, Kent's journey was marked by personal adversity, including the loss of his wife to breast cancer. Through his own struggles and redemption, Kent found solace in faith and a newfound purpose in helping others navigate life's challenges. This culminated in the creation of a transformative guidebook where he merged golf principles with biblical principles into his teachings, paralleling the importance of following proven fundamentals.
Today, Kent's passion for golf continues unabated as he dedicates himself to expanding the sport's reach, from grassroots programs in schools to international outreach efforts. His innovative teaching methods, coupled with time-honored principles, ensure a lasting legacy of excellence both on and off the course.
Kent's story is a testament to the transformative power of golf and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of others, embodying the spirit of resilience, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to excellence. He is also dedicated to sharing his testimony in Churches and other venues around the world in hie effort to make a significant contribution to the hurting people in the world.
